I suspect there may not be as many people who look forward to mornings as those who don’t.
But, guess what?
Mornings can be the best time to get some things done that you likely can’t throughout the entire rest of the day.
It’s true, and here’s why:
For most moms the day is typically filled with doing things to care for your family. Once they begin to happen, it can be hard to squeeze in things that feed your mind or soul, or help your body retain strength.
That’s why I’ve learned to start my day a couple of hours before the rest of the family.
I’m not a morning person, but in the dozen or so years that I’ve been getting up ahead of my family, I’ve found that I actually look forward to the time enough to stay motivated to get up early.
These moments of time alone are perfect for work on personal goals that you’ve set for yourself.
It doesn’t mean that you have to get up hours before daylight, either. If you could benefit from just 15 minutes, that’s fine. Over time, you’ll be surprised by how much you can accomplish.
Neither does it mean that you have to get up early every single day. There are days that I decide to sleep in. If I recognize my need for more sleep, have been up late, or am sick, I can change my plan.
And, I’m not dragging myself up each morning either – I look forward to it!
Those early morning moments are when that I do things that I love.
I look forward to getting up because I’m excited about what I’ll be doing – and that makes all the difference. It isn’t about will-power or following some strict method, but about inspiration.
Through the years I’ve done quite a few different things during these hours, mostly depending upon the ages of my children.
During seasons when they were very young, I always tried to do things I loved that were difficult to do once they were up like Bible study, outdoor exercise, gardening, sewing, reading, or writing.
As they’ve got older, it’s become much easier to do these things once they got up, but I still enjoy the time of linear focus.
Here’s the Key:
Find what you love to do – what you would love to accomplish without multi-tasking – giving it your whole attention. Then make plans to do just that in the amount of time you have.
Maybe you have time to do several things. Or maybe just one.
Maybe you can complete it new every day. Or perhaps it will be ongoing and take several days, weeks, or even months to complete.
It doesn’t matter. The point is to find something that inspires you and pursue it.
By the time your family begins their day, you will have spent time feeding your soul, nurturing your mind, or strengthening your body, and will be ready to launch into the day with enthusiasm.
A Word of Caution
In no way, however, should you allow this time to deprive you of the sleep you need. If you can’t get up early one day or even for several days, don’t push it. And, make sure you’re getting to bed early enough so that you can be well-rested before getting up the next morning.
I began getting up before my family when several of my children were still young, but it’s been such an encouragement to me personally, that I continue it, even though they’re no longer needy the moment they open their eyes.
