Have you ever thought much about the WHY of being creative?
(If you’re stuck on even believing you’re creative, read How to Nurture Your Creativity first.)
That’s an important question to be answered.
Being Creative and Personal Fulfillment
The first place most people land when talking about passionate creativity is personal fulfillment. And while it’s true that it does have the potential to be extremely satisfying, that isn’t always the case.
Some of the most brilliant and passionate expressions of creativity have sometimes come from people who lived miserable lives. People who were grasping for meaning; looking for hope, but even through their creative efforts, didn’t find it.
If you’ve studied much classic literature or art, you know this.
It always saddened me as I studied literature to read a piece that was so incredibly full of creative beauty, and then learn that the author led a life of depression, despair, or a fight to escape.
I wondered at how they could produce such moving works, yet struggle to find for themselves the response their work stirred in the hearts and minds of those who read it.
And I dare say the same characterizes the age we live in as well.
But, thankfully, that wasn’t always the case with classical works – nor is it always the case now.
There are those who have a foundation of fulfillment in their lives and their passionate creativity is an overflow, a beautiful expression.
They reach deep within the well of joy and peace they already know to produce something that reaches so much further that just themselves.
And that’s the true beauty of passionate creativity!
Seeking Self-Fulfillment Alone Doesn’t Work
Because being creative just to fulfill ourselves soon becomes stale.
We get self-absorbed and self-focused. Our creative efforts lose their freshness and powerful shaping abilities.
They ring hollow and dull.
I know this personally.
When I sense that my creative passion is slow and not clicking well, I know I’ve lost my focus. Instead of working from a wellspring of contentment and joy – of thanksgiving and a deep desire to express that in a creative way to bless and better my world – those times of hampered creativity are when I’m looking inward instead.
Perhaps I’m overworked and tired, struggling with personal or physical stresses, or just juggling the demands of an ordinary life.
The cause is not so much the issue. It’s the effect that matters.
It takes tweaking my perspective.
And it isn’t just me. It works that way for us all.
Because it doesn’t matter who you are or what your life look like. We all have things that challenge our perspectives, sometimes even daily.
But when we change our focus, when we seek to make life a little better for those around us, we create a stronger environment for our creativity to live in.
We give it room to stretch and grow, to shake the dust of dullness loose and to shape the world we live in – in a powerful and beautiful way.
Isn’t that exciting?
Your unique and passionate creativity is far more than just a means of fulfillment or stress relief.
How to Shape Your World Well
Shaping your world well isn’t complicated. It’s how we’re wired.
With your God-given design of built-in creativity, you can use it in your own unique way to make a positive and lasting impact in your world – no matter how small or large it is.
It may be just one single person.
It may be millions.
The numbers don’t really matter; the heart behind the effort does.
We talk a lot about crafts, repurposed and upcycled projects, and all kinds of thrift store finds around here. Those are some of my strongest creative expressions – and I love sharing them with the purpose and intent to encourage and inspire creativity in you.
But I’d be so off track to even begin to claim these are the best or only ways to be creative. There’s so much more!
Just how broad is creativity?
I can’t really say.
What I can say, however, it that it’s probably as far-reaching as individuality. You may use something you see here on the blog as a jump-start to your own project, but I’m sure yours will have your own personal spin on it – your unique creative expression.
There isn’t another person on the planet who can do it like you!
And if there’s only one single person in your life that can be blessed, encouraged, helped, or bettered because of the influence of your creativity in their life…who else is going to meet that need if you don’t?
And that’s why being creativity matters in your world.
It Comes Back Around
I appreciate words of encouragement. It spurs me forward with enthusiasm when someone tells me what I do impacts them positively.
But aren’t we all that way?
Don’t we all love knowing that we’re doing something meaningful for the people around us? And aren’t those words life-giving and equipping when they hit our hearts?
When we choose to shift our focus from ourselves to others, using our creativity for the benefit of others, it doesn’t run us empty. It doesn’t wear us out or deplete our resources.
It builds them back up.
And in turn, it feeds the creative passion we already have and makes it grow.
So we can do it again and again.
